Forklift Battery Daily Inspection: A Step‑by‑Step Guide

Proper battery care extends the life of your forklift and prevents unexpected downtime. This guide walks you through the essential daily checks—when to add distilled water, when to charge, and how to disconnect safely.

1. Check Water Level & Add Distilled Water

  • When to add: After charging, when the battery is fully charged and plates are covered. Never add before charging – water expands and may overflow.
  • How: Open vent caps, inspect each cell. Fill with distilled water only, just below the fill tube (about ¼ inch from the bottom of the fill well).
  • Never: Use tap water; minerals damage the battery.

2. Connect to the Charger – When to Start

  • When to charge: Ideally when the battery reaches 20–30% remaining capacity. Avoid deep discharge (below 20%) as it shortens battery life.
  • Procedure: Turn off the forklift, open the battery compartment, clean connectors, then plug in the charger before turning it on.
  • Safety: Charge in a well‑ventilated area (batteries emit hydrogen gas).

3. During Charging – What to Watch

  • Charger should automatically stop when battery is full. Never leave a battery on “equalize” longer than recommended.
  • Monitor for excessive heat, smoke, or unusual odours. If any, disconnect immediately and inspect.
  • Keep vent caps on while charging to prevent acid spray.

4. Disconnect After Charging

  • When to disconnect: Only after the charger indicates complete charge and has stopped automatically.
  • Procedure: Turn off the charger first, then unplug the connector from the battery.
  • After disconnecting: Check for any corrosion on terminals. If present, clean with a mixture of baking soda and water, then dry thoroughly.

5. Final Safety & Documentation

  • Always wear safety goggles and gloves when handling batteries.
  • Close the battery compartment securely after charging.
  • Log the date, water added, and any issues in your daily inspection sheet.
  • If you notice swelling, cracks, or excessive corrosion, contact a service technician immediately.
💡 Quick reminder: Add distilled water after charging, never before. Always charge in a ventilated area. A well‑maintained battery can last up to 5 years!
